The O Commons: Immigrant Artists Mutual Aid is a community-driven initiative that responds to the growing precarity of working as an artist or scholar on an O‑1 visa, one of the main U.S. work visas for individuals with extraordinary ability in the arts. In today's gig-based cultural economy, many artists rely on multiple jobs, freelance work, and institutional affiliations to make a living. O‑1 visa holders, however, are often restricted to a narrow range of authorized employment. As fewer cultural institutions are willing or able to sponsor O‑1 visa holders and as the cost and complexity of maintaining legal status continue to rise, immigrant artists increasingly find themselves excluded from employment opportunities, forced to navigate an opaque immigration system, and left without access to the practical knowledge and a support system that is needed to sustain their careers.
Immigration attorneys provide essential legal expertise. However, much of the legal process depends on practical knowledge that is rarely shared publicly: timelines, recommendation letters, supportive institutions, and the experiences of artists and scholars who successfully obtained their O visas.
The O Commons fills this gap with peer-to-peer mutual aid and shared digital resources.
Artists who built their lives and careers in the United States and must repeatedly renew their immigration status.
International students who wish to remain in the artistic communities they developed during their studies.
Artists invited to work in the U.S. who need legal authorization before their professional engagements can begin.
A gathering for immigrant artists, cultural workers, students, and allies. We share stories and immigration resources, exchange practical knowledge, and connect with each other — then create short artistic responses to documents, objects, and memories from our immigration journeys.
Bring a document, object, or memory from your immigration journey if you'd like to share it as a monologue, performance, visual artwork, installation concept, or another form.
Mentors who completed the O‑1 or EB process guide artists and scholars currently navigating it — experience-based, responsible, never a substitute for legal counsel. However, some artists and scholars have successfully petitioned their own cases. You can also connect with them here.
